I get a lot of questions on the regular about charcuterie, like, “How exactly do you say that word?” and “How do you make those roses out of salami?” and “Well just how much do I need for my party/event/gathering?”
All great questions!
(If you want to know how to make those salami roses, attend a workshop!)
Today, we’re answering, “How much do I need?” The answer is, of course, it depends.
Now, before you roll your eyes, it’s not one of those just follow your heart answers.
What it depends on is two things:
1. How many people will be attending?
2. How much other food will there be?
Let’s say you’ve got 10 people attending.
If this is a cocktail party, for instance, and the charcuterie board is one of the main or only foods provided, you’ll want at least 4 to 6 ounces of food per person.
Note: that’s not of each type of thing on the board, it’s total. So for this board, you’re looking at anywhere from 40 to 60 ounces of food, which includes your meat, cheese, fruit, nuts, chocolate, etc.
Now, if this is an appetizer and a bigger meal will follow, you’ll only need 2 to 3 ounces of food per person.
This is why our charcuterie options have a range, with the lower end being how much it will serve as the standalone food vs. how many it will serve if it’s an appetizer.
Once you know the answers to those two questions, you’ll just need to decide if you want to serve charcuterie cups or a traditional board.
Decisions, decisions.
